The economy continues to cause major problems for businesses.
Where have all the leaders gone who could help?
Family problems continue to grow as do broken homes, divorce and
other family issues.
Where have all the leaders of the family gone?
People continue to be unhappy with the job the government is doing?
Where have all the leaders who could run for office gone?
In fact, where have all the leaders gone anyway? I am looking around
and I do not see many. I see a bunch of fluff about leadership. I see a
lot of talk about what leadership is. I see a bunch of people who think
they are leaders. Yet, I see few real leaders.
Just because you are a manager does not mean you are a leader. In fact,
you can be a good manager, yet a terrible leader. Don’t confuse the two.
A simply way to understand the difference.
Leaders do what is right.
Managers do what they are told.
If you turn around and look behind you and no one is following you,
it doesn’t matter what your title is, who you are, or who gave you the role,
you are not leading anyone. You are just taking a walk.
Just because someone made you the boss, the president, the person in
charge does not mean anyone made you a leader. Titles do not make you
a leader. Again, is anyone following you?
If everyone that works for you agrees with you. If they all do what you tell
them to. If they are weak. Then guess what, you are still not a leader.
Just as I discussed with one of my clients the other day. Great leaders
surround themselves with people who are:
- Smarter than they are
- Ready, willing and able to push back on the leader.
- Able to replace the leader when the leaders moves on.
Problems, issues and concerns have been part of the American landscape
since this country was first set foot upon. But we always had the leadership
we needed to make things happen. The leadership willing to take the risk.
Almost all the problems we are dealing with today can be directly related to
our lack of leadership.
Be it in the home, the family, business, the church or government.
So take some time and ask the following questions, both of yourself
and others.
If you can’t follow, then how do you ever expect anyone to follow you? You
become a great leader by first becoming a great follower.
If you can’t lead at home, now can you lead anywhere? Start in your own
home. Lead those you love first and see what skills you develop.
If you can’t lead yourself, how can you lead anyone else? What can I say.
How can you lead when you are going around in circles yourself.
If you have no mentors to teach you to lead - how will you ever be able to
lead? You need to find that mentor to help you. If you want to lead, then
find someone who is great and follow them.
Leaders cannot always be warm and fuzzy, but they need to know when
to be warm and fuzzy.
Leaders have to do what is right, even if it is not popular or the answer to
a survey. I know most of you may not like this one, but it is true. If you
look at the greatest leaders of the past, you will find points in their career
when they had to make those very tough decisions, the ones that really
hung them out there. Yet, in many cases, those decisions also helped
them to become the great leader they were.
Leaders have to take risks, put their neck on the line, make decisions.
If you can’t make a decision, you will never lead. If you can’t make a
decision, go back and follow and learn for awhile.
Leaders have to walk the walk. Be careful that your actions are not speaking
so loud no one can hear you? The single most important element is that,
people follow what you do, not what you say. So lead by example.
I conclude with a great comment from legionary football coach Don Shula.
“The problem with most leaders today is they don’t stand for anything.
Leadership implies movement toward something and conviction provides
that direction. If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall of anything.”
Be a great leader and stand for what you believe in. Even when it seems
you are the only one.
