Planning, key #2 to making 2010 your best year ever
Today we want to look at setting up a plan
for 2010 based on our vision which we
have built and our why which we have defined.
We now know where we want to go and
why we want to go there. Now the next
step - how are we going to get there?
We start with Goals, but we have to be
careful because to many times people set
up to many goals. Or they set up goals and
they do not do any thing with them once
they are defined.
That is the reason we started with a
vision first and then we defined why
we wanted that vision. Remember that
a vision is always, or should always be
on our minds. We should always be thinking
about where we want to go. Remember the
vision, as we discussed last week, it has
to be driving us, it should always be leading
us. We have to have a passion to get there.
Today we are going to build the plan. The
one thing I always tell people is that you
have a vision, now what is it that you need
to do to make that vision a reality. It does
not have to be super complex, in fact the
simplier it is, the high chance we have for
success.
In the planning process we should be looking
at two types of goals. One is what I call
mid-range goals, what is it we want to
do 2-3 years out and the second is short-term
goals, what do I want to do this year.
Today we are going to concentrate on
short-term goals. Based on your vision,
what are you going to do to get there
this year. You need to set up some goals.
Goals are very simple to set up. First they
have to be measurable. In other words,
the goal has to be something you can
actually do and you have to be able to
tell that you have or have not accomplished
it.
Then once you have a goal, then you can
say, OK here is the goal now what do I
need to do to get there.
Let me walk you through a simple example
using my own business as an example.
First my vision, which is very simple - I
want to be on the stage in Las Vegas
regularly speaking to thousands of business
owners about what it takes to make them
successful.
Second, the why for my vision - because
I want to help people use the gifts they
have and stop holding back. I want to help
them go for the gold.
With that in mind, my first goal could be
something simple as: To speak 100 times
over the next 12 months.
That is a simple goal, easy to remember.
It is measurable, I will know when I have
or have not accomplished it.
Once I have thatg I need to define what the
tasks are that I need to accomplish to make
this happen. Again, do not go crazy, I
simply list 3-5 things to start with. If I
complete them all and am not at goal, or
if they are not working, then I will have
to adjust.
So in my case here is my list:
1. Write an information piece every week
and send out to my email list
2. Build email list by adding 100 names a
week to it.
3. Let everyone I meet know that I am
available to speak by connecting with them
regularly both through email and phone.
4. Create a post card that is directly related
to my speaking to hand out at networking
events and mail out to people,
5. Create a list of 250 people who hire
speakers and call them regularly.
So what I have created is one goal and the tasks
to accomplish that goal.
From here I will create 2-4 additional goals
and the tasks that need to be done to
accomplish them.
It does seem really simple doesn’t it?
It seems like anyone can do this?
And you are right, anyone can do it, but few do it.
So your assignment over the next week - do it.
Next week we will talk about what it takes
to make it happen.
